For the full context of this post read Psalm 7 and Ephesians 6:11-18.
What do Wonder Woman, Captain America, the Psalmist David, you and I have in common? It’s the shield. Captain America’s shield was his primary weapon. Both superheroes used their shields to protect themselves and others, and to take down the bad guys. They both have amazing shield skills!
We also have a shield for battle. In the New Testament, Paul referred to our shield as a shield of faith. In the Psalms, David referred to God as our shield.
10 My shield is God Most High,
who saves the upright in heart (Psalm 7:10, NIV).
David was a warrior. He was skilled in battle and undoubtedly knew how to use his shield to handle a bad guy or two. David wrote Psalm 7 during a time when his enemies were out to get him and he needed his shield for protection. He was exhausted, he needed rest, and he knew he would be protected with God as his shield.
Every now and then, I could use a shield which I could throw at the bad guys in my life. I imagine such a shield would knock my enemies flat on the ground and then boomerang back to me. The truth is that I struggle to throw a frisbee in the right direction, so I am pretty sure I would struggle to throw a shield! That’s alright! With a shield like the God Most High, I can use my shield for protection and allow him to fight my battles for me. I can take shelter under my shield while God does the rest.
When you find yourself up against a bad day, a bad situation, or a bad person, grab ahold of your shield, take shelter under it, and allow the God Most High to take care of the rest.
