If you are a Marvel Super Hero Avengers fan, the words Infinity Wars excite you. If you are not Marvel fan, or don’t even know what infinity wars are, you are truly missing out on something phenomenal! Allow me a moment to indulge in the topic of infinity wars.
Finite is an adjective. It describes something that has boundaries, a beginning, an end, and rules. We generally process information through a finite viewpoint. We can grasp and understand a finite world. We play finite games such as board games and baseball. Baseball has a beginning, an end, and rules which we understand. When the World Series ends, there is only one World Series champion team, and the season is over. We understand finite.
Infinite is also an adjective. It describes something that is limitless, and unbound by generalized rules of understanding. We struggle to conceptualize an infinite scheme for life and the world, but truth be told, we live in an infinite world. Just as Marvel’s infinity wars span time and space and challenge finite rules of engagement and understanding, we are also a part of an infinity war which spans time and space. Read what the Apostle Paul writes about our infinity war:
3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10: 3-5, NIV).
When we have a fight with a family member, or lose a job, we can problem solve solutions and bounce back because these are finite situations. We understand them. When we are in the midst of a spiritual battle, it is out of our realm of understanding. We cannot fully comprehend the infinite world which began before our existence and that we will continue to have a part of for all of eternity, even after our finite death. We cannot see the boundless spiritual realm, and it challenges our rules of engagement and understanding. We try to process spiritual or infinite battles as if they were earthly or finite battles. That doesn’t work.
Paul writes that we do not wage war as the world does and we cannot fight with those weapons. We have to learn to fight in the infinite realm of the spiritual world. We have the power to demolish strongholds and pretensions that set themselves up against the knowledge of God. We must learn to use that power. We cannot use finite tools to fight infinite battles. It’s time to boldly join the infinity wars which we are a part of.
Suit up superheros; there are strongholds waiting for us to demolish them. We know who wins the infinity wars. Let’s fight!
Great perspective. The spiritual war is on.
Well THAT got my attention. Very good word, once again. Thank you for sharing.
